Artist Bio
Marcia Walmer is a Realist who works in soft pastel, charcoal, and graphite. She works toward excellence in drawing and aims to elevate the common, often overlooked places by finding their unique sun-lit brilliance and beauty. Long periods of observation allow her to recreate the details of texture and form which fascinate her.
Marcia’s approach to painting is traditional, emphasizing drawing, accurate proportions, perspective, and values. Applying pastel expands on that foundation and provides opportunities to mark freely, to push color and create uniquely.
Marcia has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Edinboro University and is associated with the Great Lakes Pastel Society (GLPS). One of her recent pastels has been juried into the 2024 GLPS National Online Show.
She works from her studio in Moon Township, PA and travels and hikes throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and North Carolina for inspiration and resources. Marcia plans to work in other painting mediums of oil and acrylic in the near future.
Artist Statement: "Fluent in Nature" Exhibition May-June 2026
Fluent In Nature titles a group of pastel paintings inspired by my strong attraction to water. The currents and falls, the sounds and rhythms; they pull me in ---nearly hypnotic. Water’s gleaming reflections and translucent colors are varied and lovely. Delightful to the senses. I desired to preserve these impressions and what my eyes were seeing in nature, and to effectively express this flow of water.
Each pastel painting captures a single encounter with the nature of water at a moment in time. The focus is narrow and invites a slower way of seeing what otherwise may go unnoticed. Observe the interplay of water, light, and form. Note the shifting color. Sense the quiet or the energy of each encounter. This is how we grow more fluent in nature.
(More to enjoy: While rambling near the water, it is undeniable that a few feathered friends will invade a person's space. Three won my attention. This show includes pastel drawings of these characters.)
