Artist Bio
Growing up near Presque Isle State Park on the shores of Lake Erie I developed an affinity for the natural world. I find the changing seasons, the cycles and intricacies of nature’s design intriguing. I also feel a heightened awareness and a spiritual renewal when hiking, walking a beach, or just being in my garden. Through my hands clay becomes the connection between my creative process and the allure of nature. Narrative, symbolic, or decorative, my organic sculptures bring to mind the raw elements of trees, plants, earth, and water. Each piece is original, hand sculpted from stoneware clay requiring at least two kiln firings.
Originally from Erie, PA, I received my BFA from Columbus College of Art & Design and MFA from the Ohio State University. I have been exhibiting my sculpture since 1978 and my work can be found in businesses, private homes, and museums throughout the country. It has also been featured in publications including "500 Animals in Clay" and "The Best of 500 Ceramics" both published by Lark Books. Currently I am teaching at the Cultural Arts Center, Columbus, Ohio.
Artist Statement: "Fluent in Nature" Exhibit May-June 2026
Whenever I am outdoors, walking along a beach, or hiking a trail, I find myself drawn to naturally occurring forms that cause me to stop and look more closely.
Their intricacy, textures, and shapes are small sculptures of raw beauty. I frequently collect stones, seedpods, sea shells, and pieces of driftwood that become inspiration for my pieces. Rediscovering these treasures later in my pocket or in my studio lets me reconnect with the specific place and experience where they were found, creating a meaningful, almost spiritual link to nature.
I am also inspired by the concept of animals as spirit guides or messengers that take on magical roles in our lives if we are open to them. Such as a cardinal is said to be a visitor of a departed loved one. They can become strong symbols that create a mystical story. I believe we are entwined with all living things, plants and animals, as well as the environment we share. I want to reflect the beauty that surrounds us by creating work that brings a little focus, quietness, and wonder to contemplate.
My sculptures are all hand-built from stoneware clay requiring two kiln firings. Some pieces I approach intuitively letting the clay guide me which results in more spontaneous and fluid forms. Other works are more narrative where I sculpt the clay to tell a story.
